Rock Climbing at Chironico
The Beta

Type of climbing available: BoulderingClimbing at Chironico

General: Excellent granite bouldering on land that seems to be owned by the village of Chironico. A good alternative to nearby Cresciano, especially when Cresciano is hot or crowded or you are looking for more variety. Time of year to go seems to be spring or fall, winter may be okay. The bouldering is split up into two larger areas on each side of the village, those two larger areas are comprised of about 25 smaller areas, many of then very close to each other and all well forested. There is a large variety of problems and features from easy to very hard, the rock can be rough on the tips. There is water right in town, just as there is in every swiss village.

Rest Day Activities: Same as Cresciano if you head towards Bellinzona, the train station in Biasca accesses any place the Bellinzona train station accesses, they are on the same line. You are closer to the top of the valley so going to San Gottard pass and beyond is easier.

Access Issues:

Weather: A little cooler than Cresciano, similar though.

LOGISTICS

Directions:
Chronico is farther up Valle Leventina than Cresciano, about 30 minutes on the bus. Coming from Bellinzona take the train to Biasca and catch a bus in front of the Biasca train station to Lavorgo. Or take a bus from the train station in Bellinzona all the way to Lavorgo. In Lavorgo you catch a minibus across from the stazione in front of the post office about once an hour. Keep in mind that the latest bus is about 6:30 PM, even on weekdays. If you miss it Chironico is only a 20-25 minute a walk from Lavorgo. Coming from Cresciano you just take a bus to Lavorgo and get the minibus. The bus will let you off at the post office in Chironico which is basically the middle of town. I won't really explain how to get to all the boulders, this area would be hard to get around without a book, or someone showing you first. Basically from the post office left or right will get you to some boulders. If you drive there are different places to park depending on where you want to climb.
Lodging: Same as Cresciano you aren't supposed to camp there because the village owns the land. The closest campground is in Faido which is up valley from Lavorgo on the bus, I don't know how much it is. I am unsure of whether or not there is lodging in Chironico, I didn't notice any signs for it. There are hotels in Lavorgo, Biasca,Faido, but hotels run a minimum of 100 swiss franc per night for two people. There are plenty of good bivy spots around, I saw people camping discreetly. Closest ammenities seem to be Biasca where there are a few grocery stores, internet, a sports store that sells some climbing odds and ends. A closer option is Bodio which has a grocery store and a bakery. As far as restaurants there is on in Chironico and a few in Lavorgo.
