Rock Climbing at Buruku Rock
The Beta

Type of climbing available: Fairly easy but excitingClimbing at Buruku Rock

General: Very prominant sandstone rock tower, ca 150 ft tall atop a low hill. Easily visible on the road from Kwahu Tafo to Adawso where the ferry across the Afram arm of the Volta Lake leaves. The S face has the most exciting climb (starting up the big chimney and trending left at the upper overhangs). Quite easy (UK severe?) but spectacular. Easier, but less interesting route at the N end.

History:
As far as I know, the rock was first climbed by Pete XXX and me around 1972 (date can be confirmed when I look it up!). Pete was a Quantity Surveyor in Accra who had previously climbed all the famous N faces in the European Alps (Eiger, Matterhorn, Piz Badile? etc.) The second time we climbed Buruku it had had a fire on the summit, possibly caused by a lightning strke. In subsequent years, the dry forest surrounding the rock has been completely destroyed by fire. The approach in June-Sept may therefore be arduous by virtue of the tall grasses!

Ethics: The rock is sacred and aparently named after the God, Buruku. ye village near its based is Burukuase (meaning under Buruku). I do not know if the local people are concerned about climbing on the rock

Rest Day Activities:

Access Issues:

Weather: Generally dry during daytime, sometimes wet in May, June. Dry and relatively cool in August
